A big thanks to 12ozProphet.com for shedding some light on some recent character based paintings of mine alongside a selection of corresponding sketches, revealing a glimpse into my process from sketch to wall.
I rarely have the luxury of being able to choose a specific selection of colours or canvas size and quite enjoy the test of working with whatever is available. I’m quite happy with how the colourways on these have organically come together with paint that I had left over from other walls. In reflection I think they perfectly mimic the personality of these particular characters, particularly the purple hats.
The original sketches tend to act as more of a documented thought process or concept prompt, as opposed to a piece ready to replicate, and this makes the whole process much less laboured and a lot more enjoyable. Rather than stressing over logistics and conflicting space issues, I find a kinda freedom in the flow which allows room for happy accidents and discovery and forces you to constantly think a few steps ahead.
Shouts also to those also present in the joiner shots.
